If you are short of space, all you need is a windowsill propagator. We look at some of the different ones available
What to consider
Durability
If you want to use your propagator for only one growing season then there are plenty of inexpensive products, some resembling seed trays with a transparent lid. Expect to pay more for durable propagators that can be reused year after year. These will have sturdy bases and thick plastic covers, which will help to prevent breakages.
Power supply
Propagator options range from the unheated to basic heated versions and thermostatically controlled models. Unheated propagators are cheapest. They stop most fluctuations in temperature – unless your heating turns off at night. Heated propagators are straightforward to use and provide a higher temperature for seeds to germinate faster, but you can’t alter the temperature. Adjustable temperature propagators are likely to be the most expensive, but the benefit is you can alter the level of heat to create optimum and stable growing conditions for your plants.
Size
Although all of the propagators here are described as ‘windowsill’ versions, there can still be huge variation between the sizes. Our selection ranges from 23cm (9in) long to 76cm (30in) long, with variations in the width as well. Before buying, it is worth measuring your windowsill and checking your chosen propagator will fit neatly on it. You don’t want all your hard work to go to waste when the propagator tips off after a few days!
