How can I restrict ivy growing over the boundary wall?
I have some ivy growing over the boundary wall from my neighbour’s side. Is there anything I can do to restrict its growth or kill it?
Ivy is difficult to control. It roots wherever it comes into contact with the ground, developing a thick, woven mat of root and stem. The leaves are waxy and poor at absorbing herbicides and it grows with terrifying speed and vigour.
This is a problem which you may want to discuss with your neighbour. Clearly the top growth needs to be severely cut back to prevent it from invading your garden. If your neighbours want to enjoy the ivy on their side of the fence, that’s fine, but it is their responsibility to prevent it from growing out of bounds. Your only alternative is to cut it off yourself regularly.
