Cutworms
Q: Some of my brassicas died last year when they were still young plants – the stems were just bitten through. I was told it was cutworm.
A: Cutworm is the term for caterpillars of moths that live just below the surface of the soil. At night they emerge to munch away at our plants. The stems are chewed and the plants collapse. Digging and hoeing helps to expose the caterpillars, either pick them up and destroy them or put on the bird table for the birds!
