Furry creatures found!
My sister found some small, furry creatures on her evergreen euonymus bush. Can you help to identify them?
A: These could have been cushion scale or euonymus scale. In either case, Euonymus japonicus is a robust evergreen and capable of carrying a number of pests without the need to control them.
Euonymus scale can, however, cause die back of some branches. Initial signs are yellow marks on the leaves.
Cushion scale, which also affects other plants, appears as oval, yellow-brown scales which appear on the undersides of the leaves . Most people are first aware of the pest when they spot the egg cases, which are small, oblong, white and woolly.
I suggest that there is little need to destroy either of these pests unless the plant’s health has been compromised. Furthermore, insecticides available to private gardeners are only likely to give partial control. If you feel you must spray, do so in early summer when the immature scale insects have
