How can I beat potato blight?
Q: How can I prevent my potatoes from getting blight?
A: If the summer is warm and wet, blight is very difficult to stop. However, potatoes with signs of blight on the leaves (brown patches and white mould on the edges) can still be saved. Make sure that you earth up the tubers to protect them from coming into contact with blight spores on the soil surface.
Also completely remove all the foliage before you harvest your crop so that the tubers do not come into contact with diseased leaves.
You can also spray as a preventative measure. Spray with Bayer Dithane 945 when the plants are in full leaf.
It is also vital that you discard any affected tubers because the disease will spread through stored potatoes.
Try growing resistant varieties such as ‘Sarpo Mira’ or ‘Cara’ (both from Thompson and Morgan).
