A spoonful of sugar mixed with water could prove a lifesaver for Britain’s dwindling bee population, claims the RSPB.
The charity says that the pollinators are at their busiest at this time of year and sometimes become exhausted and lie on the ground, seemingly dead, as they rest a while. They’re suggesting that a sweet drink could give them the energy boost they need.
Mix around two tablespoons of white granulated sugar with one tablespoon of water and place the mix in a small container like an egg cup among bees’ favourite flowers, they advise..
Gardeners can also help by planting flowering plants which provide vital nectar and pollen for bees and other insects. Solitary bees also like to burrow into dry, sunny banks or warm patches of bare earth in a lawn or borer, even among a pile of stones and gardeners are encouraged to retain such features in their gardens.
