Go green and pee on your compost heap
The National Trust wants the nation’s gardeners to help activate a composting revolution – by peeing on their compost heaps.
A three metre long ‘pee bale’ has been installed within the walled gardens of the Trust’s Wimpole Hall in Cambridge and head gardener Philip Waites is encouraging male colleagues to relieve themselves when the call of nature occurs.
The pee bale is added to compost heaps to stimulate the composting process, but it’s only used by gardeners out of visitor hours.
Rosemary Hooper, Wimpole estate’s master, said: “Peeing on a compost heap activates the composting process, help to produce a ready supply of lovely organic matter to add back to the garden.
“With the ready supply of fallen leaves at this time of year, it’s great to get composting. Adding a little pee just helps get it all going; it’s totally safe and a bit of fun too.”
