New aquilegia and penstemons for autumn
Jersey-based Gardening Direct are releasing some stunning new plants in their autumn collection in July.
All are available as plug plants and here Garden News writer Pam Richardson reveals her favourites
Trailing pansy ‘Plentifall’ This new cascading pansy is perfect for hanging baskets. A cross with a high-branching Arctic species, this multi-branched pansy has taken 15 years to develop. Its ultra hardy parent makes these trailing pansies extra hardy and weather resistant.
'Sunpansy’ Large and frilly, these multi-coloured pansy flowers are held well above their long stems. This new variety is great for cutting and the vigorous plants quickly bush out to quickly create a colourful show in containers.
Pansy ‘Giant Colourburst’ Possibly the world’s largest pansy flower. Gigantic blooms are weather resistant and truly enormous (more than twice the size of the old Universal pansies). Great for causing a stir at the local show as well as in beds or containers.
Perennials
Aquilegia ‘Sunshine’ Long-spurred, double flowers in bright golden yellow bring a splash of colour to late spring borders every year. Grown from F1 seed so next year’s self-sown seedlings won’t come true from seed but look out for interesting colours if they cross pollinate.
Penstemon ‘Electric Blue’ The vibrant blue flowers on this mid-height penstemon should make it a winner in summer borders or even large containers. This perennial plant has been seed raised to keep costs down. Protect plants from severe winter weather and they will flower every year.
Saxifrage ‘Touran Large White’ Bred for larger flowers and a brighter colour, this new saxifrage won an international horticultural trades award for best novelty perennial for 2010. Dainty but showy, this alpine perennial blooms in late spring and early summer.
Black stunner for 2011
Petunia ‘Black Velvet’ A new introduction planned for 2011 that definitely has the wow factor – ‘Black Velvet’ is sure to be the must-have bedding plant for next year’s summer containers and borders. Whether you combine it with vibrant colours or pale pastels it will lift a planting scheme to designer status!
